The 2025 Osaka Expo (Expo 2025), themed “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” focuses on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Built around five key pillars—People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership—it introduces three strategic directions: Green Vision, Action Plan, and Sustainable Procurement, embedding sustainability in every aspect.
Expo 2025 achieved ISO 20121 sustainable event management certification in 2024, underscoring its strong environmental responsibility. Beyond showcasing cutting-edge technologies, it integrates circular economy and net-zero practices into architecture, energy, food, and resource use, positioning itself as one of the world’s most iconic showcases of sustainability in action.
Expo 2025’s Path to Sustainability: Transforming Food Waste into a Circular Economy Showcase
The venue’s dining areas not only embrace the “farm-to-table” concept by sourcing local ingredients to reduce the carbon footprint of food transportation, but also send post-consumption food waste to a functioning biogas plant behind the Japan Pavilion. Anaerobic digestion generates electricity and heat—achieving both self-sufficiency and zero waste.
The Japan Pavilion is built around “circularity” as its core concept, presenting a closed-loop system that integrates food, energy, water, and materials. The three main exhibition zones—Plants, Farm, and Factory—demonstrate the stages of “waste to water,” “water to materials,” and “materials to products.” Covering themes from energy and food to environment and fashion, visitors experience firsthand the pathways of a circular economy. Food waste is also broken down into purified water and carbon dioxide. Part of the purified water is introduced into the pavilion’s central pond and used to cultivate algae, which is then converted into bioplastics, proteins, and fibers for stools, utensils, and even staff uniforms—demonstrating the complete life cycle of “waste to resource.”
