TASS2025: Greenhouse gases more dangerous than CO₂ – HFCs Management Regulation takes effect in July!

In today’s era of increasingly severe extreme weather, combating climate change has become far more complex than simply “reducing carbon emissions.” The air conditioners and refrigerators we use daily actually contain a hidden gas with global warming potential far exceeding that of carbon dioxide – Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Unlike ozone-depleting CFCs, HFCs have Global Warming Potential higher than CO₂ – making them climate change “silent killers.”

To align with the emission reduction efforts of over 160 countries worldwide, Taiwan’s Ministry of Environment launched the HFCs Management Regulation in February, effective July 1st. All HFC imports/exports now require prior approval and are limited to Montreal Protocol parties. Taiwan targets reducing HFC consumption to 20% of baseline levels by 2045, strengthening high-GWP gas controls while advancing international climate action.
