In Pornainen, Finland, a massive sand battery built from repurposed crushed soapstone became operational this June, establishing a new milestone in global energy storage innovation. This groundbreaking system converts surplus solar and wind power into thermal energy reaching 500\u00b0C, and store it long-term in a highly efficient insulated tower.
The stored thermal energy not only supports district heating throughout the town but also extends to certain industrial processes, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Results include complete elimination of oil dependency, 60% reduction in wood consumption, conversion of biomass boilers to backup systems, and nearly 70% decrease in overall carbon emissions\u2014exemplifying low-carbon energy supply.
Sand Battery Innovation
Unlike traditional batteries, sand batteries store thermal energy. When excess renewable electricity is available, electric heaters warm sand to approximately 500\u00b0C within insulated towers. Sand’s slow thermal conductivity becomes an advantage\u2014providing exceptional heat retention that preserves energy for weeks or months. The system then releases this stored heat through heat exchangers to meet residential, commercial, and industrial heating demands, providing a stable, low-carbon, and economically viable energy storage solution.
