\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the U.S. Clean Competition Act (CCA) are set to be implemented next year, and there is high external interest in the progress of domestic carbon fee collection in Taiwan. Taiwan will announce and establish the carbon fee rate in early 2024, conduct a review of carbon emissions in 2024, and start collecting carbon fees in 2025 based on the review results. In other words, around 500 regulated companies in Taiwan will pay their first carbon fees in 2025, based on their emissions in 2024. This schedule aligns with the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) since Taiwanese companies that pay carbon fees will be eligible for deductions from European carbon tariffs.<\/p>

According to the Ministry of Environment, new measures will establish the charging methods for carbon-related sub-laws, the fee-paying entities, preferential rates, designated reduction targets, the review process for voluntary reduction plans, and the Carbon Fee Rate Review Committee. Carbon fees are not a single rate; different industries will use various indicators to determine their voluntary reduction requirements. Entities subject to carbon fee collection can propose voluntary reduction plans and apply for preferential rates. Therefore, ongoing discussions with industries are taking place on how to determine carbon fees and voluntary reduction plans.<\/p>

In the future, the Climate Change Administration of MOE in Taiwan will have two important tasks: collecting carbon fees from major carbon emitters, currently regulating 500 domestic companies covering 80% of total emissions and encouraging more small and medium-sized enterprises to apply for voluntary reduction projects through the carbon quota (carbon rights) trading mechanism. In the future, the obtained reduction quotas can be traded on the domestic carbon rights trading platform.<\/p>

2023 Sustainable Taiwan Expo will be held from November 22 to 24. This year’s show will focus on “Solutions toward Net Zero” and is strongly supported by the National Development Council, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Ministry of Environment. More than 100 exhibitors, including Taiwan Power Company, CPC Corporation, Taiwan Steel, AU Optronics, Ta Ya Group, Metal Industries Research & Development Centre, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Transcene and green energy companies (e.g., geothermal energy) will participate. Together, they are addressing the global common goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, connecting and integrating downstream supply chains across different industries. The exhibition combines forums, and business matchmaking activities, focusing on Taiwan while looking at the global stage, making it the most influential sustainability exhibition and ESG solutions platform in Asia.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
